Event description

Description

On Saturday 29 September, in celebration of European Day of Languages, we present an interactive linguistic journey in and around east London's Shoreditch for the curious and adventurous. This is a free game that explores the ways translation and foreign languages connect people and cultures from around the world. A collaboration between literary translator and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature Rosalind Harvey and the European Commission. For ages 16+; younger players welcome if accompanied by an adult. No prior language knowledge required!

The game starts at Shoreditch High Street railway station (on the London Overground line). There are three different start times: 12pm, 2pm or 4pm. Click on 'Register' and choose your preferred time. Please choose one time only and arrive 10 minutes before the start time. The game lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. It ends at a nearby mystery destination where players will receive a drink and a languages goody-bag.

At the meeting point outside the station, look for the European Commission Representation in the UK banner. We will divide you into two teams and give you instructions, plus the mystery items you need to play: sealed envelopes, locked boxes and phrasebooks.

If you register and cannot attend, please cancel your ticket by following these instructions so that others can take your place. Contact Rosalind at rosalindharvey@me.com or @Rosenkrantz with any questions.

This edition of Wordkeys is part of a celebration of European Day of Languages held at the Caravansérail bookshop on Cheshire Street on Saturday 29 September and organised by the European Commission Representation in the UK. All are welcome. From 10am to 5pm the European Commission will be present at the bookshop with goodies, information and language games and quizzes. No booking necessary, just turn up!

European Day of Languages was established in 2001 by the Council of Europe, a body comprising 47 European countries that deals with human rights.
