Learn the fundamentals of woodworking! From roughcut hardwood you will plane, shape, mortise, tenon, and sand your way to the construction of a stable and long lasting chair. By the end of this class you will be able to comfortably and confidently operate the majority of the Artisan's Asylum woodworking tools and will have learned the fundamentals of wood furniture design and construction.
This class starts at the very beginning, with the first two weeks being basic training and testing on the tools.
This is an involved process - students should expect to spend time working in their chair outside of class in order to finish in the time allotted. Students without memberships to Artisan's Asylum should purchase the non-member option above in order to get access to the facility outside of class time.
Class Goals:
This class will be provide students with familiarity and skill in the use of professional woodworking tools and techniques. Students will also learn design concepts for woodworking and at the end of the class will have made a beautiful and functional hardwood chair.
Students who successfully complete this class will be authorized to use the Artisan's Asylum bandsaw, sander, table saw, jointer, and planer unsupervised as members.
Prerequisites:
No technical experience necessary. This class starts at the very beginning, with the first two weeks providing basic training and testing on the tools. Students must be 18 years or older.
Materials:
All the practice and final project materials are covered by the $60 materials fee included in the ticket price.
Instructor Biography:
A mechanical engineer, design consultant, and entrepreneur, Chris Fitzhugh has been constructing cabinetry, tea chests, lofts, and numerous other woodworking projects for the past decade in his family's VT woodshop. He brings his background in mechanical design and precision machining to the art of fine woodworking and is focused on providing students with the design understanding and practical skills needed to construct beautiful and functional items out of wood. In his spare time Chris works on startups that help push the boundaries of robotics research.
Chris has been teaching woodworking at Artisan's Asylum since 2010, and been teaching the Build A Chair class since August of 2012.
Event Time:
*Students should expect to spend at least as much time working on their chairs outside of class as in it. For those without memberships, access to the Asylum for a 5-day pass to work on projects outside of class time is covered by the Non-member class fee.

REFUNDS: We offer full refunds for any class cancellations more than one week in advance of the class start date. After that point refunds are contingent upon the Asylum being able to fill the seat. No refunds whatsoever are offered for same-day cancellations. To request a refund for a class, please fill out this form.
CANCELLATIONS: Your class may be cancelled if too few people register. A decision will be made a few days before the class is scheduled to run, and you will be notified of the cancellation and your registration refunded in full.
