'Woodlawn, Bronx: The Big Impact of New York's Little Ireland' Webinar
Event Information
About this Event
Looking to soak in authentic Irish music, pubs, and culture without hopping on a plane to the Emerald Isle itself? Fortunately, you're in luck — that's because on the very north end of New York City's borough of the Bronx is a neighborhood steeped in Ireland's traditions, thanks to an early Irish population who immigrated there in the mid-19th century. It's time to explore New York's Little Ireland and all of its rich and festive history like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the fascinating story of Woodlawn — also known as Little Ireland, this New York City neighborhood in the Bronx is teaming with authentic Irish food, traditions, and culture thanks in part to its roots as an Irish community in the 1800s.
Led by licensed tour guide, Irish-American, and Bronx native Maggie Browne , this interactive virtual journey through Woodlawn and other Irish communities in New York will include:
- The early history of Woodlawn, including an American Revolution battle with Chief Nimham and his group of Mohican Indians fighting alongside Patriot soldiers
- The beginnings of Woodlawn's Irish community, and why it coincided with the opening of Woodlawn Cemetery during the American Civil War
- The Irish-American contribution to New York City's subway system, and why those construction workers were known as 'sandhogs'
- A discussion of Irish immigration to the area throughout the past two centuries
- A virtual stroll down Woodlawn's main street (Katonah Avenue) in addition to McLean Ave. in Yonkers (aka Emerald Mile), which are filled with all things Irish — from shops and pubs to food and music
- A look at the Yonkers St. Patrick's Parade, and how modern immigration to the community has changed the route
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Maggie — any and all questions about Little Ireland are welcomed and encouraged!
