An International Woodfire Conference at STARworks in Star, N.C. A collaboration between STARworks, the North Carolina Pottery Center, and the woodfire potters of North Carolina, the conference will be preceded by several firing workshops across the state.
Main Conference: June 8 - 11
The main conference includes a series of panelists, lecturers and demonstrations that will explore all aspects of wood firing, beginning with a lively discussion of historical, ethical and environmental issues pertaining to the field. An examinatin of the role clay has in the woodfire practice and other topics, including loading, cooling, color, kiln design and marketing will follow. Plenary lectures and keynote addresses from some of the field's most noted thinkers, as well as simultaneous demonstrations featuring sculptors and functional pottery makers will be interspersed throughout the proceedings. There will be an opening reception at the NC Pottery Center, June 8, 7pm. Mark Hewitt will host at post-conference party at his pottery shop in Pittsboro on June 11, 6 - 10pm.
NC Mountains Pre-Conference: June 1 - 7
Seven days filled with firings, exhibitions, demonstrations, studio tours, feasts, parties and music featuring guest artists Ben Richardson, Kevin Lips, Alix Brodeur, Perry Haas, Tom Alward, Sandy Lockwood, Simon Levin and Joshua Kuensting. Participants will experience an array of different firing styles and see their own work fired with a variety of unique effects. Nine kilns, each with a distinct style, will be fired at seven kiln sites across the region, featuring firings with Joey Sheehan, Dian Magie, Eric Knoche, Josh Copus, Andrew Stephenson, William Baker and Joy Tanner.
Seagrove Pre-Conference: May 27 - June 7
Twelve days of exhibitions, pottery tours, wood kiln firings, special evening events, a large scale sculpture firing and opportunities to participate in firing shifts, featuring guest artists Ingrid Allik, Alexandra Englefreit, Ashwini Bhat and Priscilla Mouritzen. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute pots to three of nine kilns being fired, including firings with the NC Pottery Center, Ben Owen III, Anne Pärtna, STARworks Clay Studio, Daniel and Kate Johnston, Michael and Levi Mahan, Chad Brown, Sid and Matt Luck, and Takuro and Hitomi Shibata. Participants are welcome to visit all firings, but will only be allowed to put pots in three firings unless otherwise notified.
