Description

What: Mighty Mud is building a 36 cubic foot Train wood kiln

Where: In the backyard of Mighty Mud, 127 Jennings ave. Knoxville, Tn.

Who: Trevor Dunn of University of North Fl & Chuck McGee of University of South Fl

When: October 7th-11th


  • Learn how to build this type of kiln with us, and our visiting builders: Trevor Dunn and Chuck McGee

  • (25lbs clay provided if you come at least 2 weeks before workshop to pick up.)

  • Please contact us by email @ mail@mightymud.com if you want to bring a school group down or if there is a partial scholarship need.)

  • Lunch and water provided daily (dietary needs please pre-arrange)


We suggest that people build and participate according to their comfort levels and physical ability. We will meet the first day at 9 a.m. to plan and organize the schedule and finish at 5 p.m. The following days may begin earlier and end later as Trevor and Chuck will put in long days. Workshop participants are free to put in as much time as they wish, but are also free to only work in the morning, to come at lunchtime or work in the afternoons. It will be flexible and we'll try and organize that on the first day.

On that first day we will also decide the best night for Chuck and Trevor to present their ceramic work to all of the participants in person and in a slide presentation.

Participants will help with all aspects of the kiln building. This workshop will be as "hands-on" as you want. If all goes well we will fire the kiln at the end of the workshop. If you wish to fire with us please bring bisqueware ready for cone 10 firing. Glazes will be provided.



About our visiting builders:

Trevor Dunn studied sculpture and ceramics at the University of South Florida. After graduating he moved to Durango, Colorado to set up a studio where he built a small anagama kiln and pursued his interest in wood-fired ceramics. IN 1999 Trevor joined the faculty at San Juan college to teach ceramics and sculpture until 2006. In 2009 he earned his MFA degree in ceramics from Utah State University. Trevor has lectured internationally and led workshops around the country in wood firing, salt/soda firing, and kiln building. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and is held in public and private collections. In 2009 he received the NCECA Graduate Student Fellowship for research and film project in Jianxi, China. He is currently an associate professor of ceramics at the University of North Florida.


Chuck McGee‘s ceramics work deals with the intersection between art and function. Through constant exploration of materials and their purpose he blends geology, material science, and functional Ceramics He has exhibited his work nationally and has been published. He is a founding member of the Tampa Tour de Clay. Tampa Tour de Clay is a collective of 15 ceramic artist in the Tampa Bay area. Over the last 12 years it has organized scholarships, Artist exhibits, and studio sales. He has helped in the designing, building and firing of kilns throughout the United States. Chuck is currently a studio technician for the University of South Florida. He assists artists, faculty, and students with their research in art. He has pioneered new uses of materials and processes.
