Event description

Description

If you live in Vancouver, chances are you are outside. A lot.

We are BEYOND stoked to partner with Coast Wilderness Medical Training to make sure you are completely prepared for anything that happens when you're out in the wild exploring. Womxn belong in the outdoors and we want to learn how to be safe in a non-intimidating setting alongside other like-minded womxn! This 20 hour no-nonsense training will prepare you to manage emergencies, whether you're in the backcountry, or you're out for a casual hike or camp. Join us for a weekend, and learn to make effective, informed decisions when things go wrong and rescue is hours away!

Course Ethos

If you work, live or play in the outdoors, Wilderness First Aid will prepare you to manage medical emergencies when resources are scarce and rescue could be hours away. Don’t expect rigid protocols - a focus on basic principles, simple but effective techniques, and informed decision making is at the heart of our instructing philosophy.

Schedule

The 20 hour WFA is typically taught over 2½ days,

Day 1: 5 PM - 9 PM, Brainboost Education (West Broadway)

Days 2 & 3: 9 AM - 5 PM, Entirely outdoors in beautiful Pacific Spirit Park.

Here's a detailed agenda and course outline!

Where We Train

This course will take place in beautiful Pacific Spirit Park - easily accessible by car, bike or public transit, but feels like you are hours from the city! Public toilets are available on site. (Note: Day 1 will take place at Brainboost Education on West Broadway)

Instructors

Quinn Workun (PCP-IV) is a paramedic with BCAS and a big fan of the outdoors. When not working, she can be found mapping out thru-hikes to add to her collection. Quinn is happiest in a tent with an improvised pillow under her head and a bag of sour jelly bellies in her pack.

Dr. Iona Liddicoat is a UK trained physician experienced in emergency and wilderness medicine. She has supported medical expeditions from the Amazonian tropics to the gnarliest mountains in Scotland and Wales.

Certifications

Successful completion of the course earns you a Wilderness & Remote First Aid with CPR C certificate from the Canadian Red Cross, valid for 3 years.

Recertification: 8 hours; you must hold an unexpired WFA certificate on that day to recertify.

BONUS! You'll also take home an official Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Field Guide to keep in your pack for you next adventure!

The Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid Field Guide has been designed with input from medical professionals and remote medical personnel from across Canada, especially for first aid practitioners operating in wilderness environments.

The field guide features easy-to-follow colour illustrations and current WMS (Wilderness Medicine Society) protocols and practices. It's printed on waterproof paper, bound with durable ring binding, and fits easily into your wilderness first aid kit for ready availability during a medical emergency.

One of many stellar reviews for the CWMT team: The course content is vast in scope and extremely relevant to our situation. Every moment of learning was interesting. The instructors were outstanding, they know and love their craft. I also appreciated the learning environment - the course was taken seriously by everyone involved, but we still had time to laugh, connect, and have fun.
