Aikido is "The Way of Harmonizing Energy", it's a 20th century martial art based on defense rather than fighting back using strength. Because of this, all is needed is the strength of a child. The idea with Aikido based self defense is to move out of the way of an attack, and this event will show you how to do that, among much other useful information regarding awareness. This is a beautiful discipline and built for the peaceful warrior, helping people become comfortable with the uncomfortable. We plan to do this once/month (or maybe more depending on interest) through 2018 so that people may continue to practice what they learn and learn other techniques.

Sensei Gordon Green (aka GoGo) has been education women on Self-Defense for almost two decades, and has worked with the LA Rams Cheerleaders, STL police, and others, and runs a dojo called Sacred Sword Aikido out of the Olivette Community Center. Sensei Gordon can be reached in the following way: https://m.facebook.com/SacredSwordAikido/ or http://www.sacredswordaikido.com/about-sacred-sword.html to learn more and to sign up for regular classes to reinforce the powerful yet simple techniques learned during this workshop.

Dr. Maureen Hughes (the organizer) and others will be assisting. Maureen met Sensei Gordon in 1999 when training at Three Rivers Aikido in Maplewood, MO. He helped her attain her Brown Belt, being directly responsible for her progress and education in the dojo (GoGo was her Sempai). A recent reconnection has inspired Maureen to build awareness in the St. Louis Community of women of how important it is to know how NOT get grabbed, struck, or taken down to the ground. Maureen is also a licensed massage therapist and PhD scientist, she has an active practice for Thai Yoga Therapeutics (an ancient tradition of Eastern Medicine), Traditional and Integrative Healing that includes sacred nutrition, emotional freedom, ministerial counseling, and running a 200 hour Certification Program to teach others to do the same for the community.
