Description

This hands-on course is all about getting comfortable with boat systems and learning basic wiring and plumbing skills for a successful season on the water. Gift this workshop to the woman in your life who loves boating for Mother's Day!

DAY ONE

Marine Systems Introduction & Electrical Basics

Learn about the systems that you will find on board a typical boat of 50 feet or less. We will review tools needed, wiring techniques and electrical best practices, batteries and load calculation, hoses and pumps, and much more. Heavy on practice, light on lectures!

DAY TWO

Installing, Testing & Troubleshooting

Day two focuses on basic installation of some components introduced in day one including lights, radios and electronics. Participants will also learn how to power up and test bilge pumps along with other boat systems.

Instructor: Beth Burlingame, IYRS '12 - ABYC certified in marine electrical, systems, and diesel. USCG 50 ton master license holder.

About the Instructor

Beth Burlingame graduated from the IYRS Marine Systems program in 2012. She has current ABYC certifications in marine electrical, systems, and diesel, as well as a variety of ASA sailing instructor credentials and a USCG 50 ton master license.

Beth has been teaching a marine systems/electrical workshop for women since 2014, and is an active volunteer with and former board member for the National Women's Sailing Association. She has owned and maintained several sail and power vessels over the years. Currently, she spends winters aboard her 38' power catamaran, cruising in the Bahamas with her husband.

What should I bring into the event?

All tools, materials and safety/protection will be provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes or boots and wear clothing that you do not mind getting dusty or dirty.

What's the refund policy?

No refunds will be offered once you have registered for the course.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the workshop?

Yes, please bring your ticket to the event or have your registration pulled up on your smartphone.


Is there parking on-site?

Yes, IYRS has a parking lot right off of Thames Street. While it is a paid lot year-round for Newport guests and visitors, you will be provided a parking pass for the day at no additional cost.
