Event description

Description

On January 21st, New York City will proudly join the international community to march in support of equality and promote civil rights for every human. The Bryn Mawr Club of New York City will be participating. Join Us!

Any and all are welcome to march with us, regardless of their affiliation with Bryn Mawr or the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City. Please bring your partners, friends, children, etc. We want this to be a big, joyous group. We want to be joined by members of other BMC alumni groups, Seven Sisters, Haverford alums, EVERYONE!

Updated Information as of Jan. 15, 2017:

When: Saturday, January 21, 2017

Gather time: beginning at 11am

March time: 11:50am (first group)

Where: Dag Hammaskjold Plaza, 47th Street btw 1st and 2nd Avenues (near the United Nations). As the Plaza only holds 8,000 people overflow will go as far back as 3rd Avenue.

Our group will meet at the entrance gate to the Katharine Hepburn Garden in the middle of the Plaza. As you know, Hepburn was Bryn Mawr class of 1928—an appropriate meeting spot! The entrance gate is by the park café near 1st Avenue. If you don’t know me, I’m a brunette and will be wearing a burgundy coat. I’ll have something BMC branded on.

Note that there will be a rally between 10:45 and 11:50 in the Plaza. As Group 1 marchers we are all welcome to attend the rally (groups are staggered as the Plaza can only hold 8,000 people at a time).

Route: At 11:50 am we will march down 2nd Avenue to 42nd Street, across 42nd to Fifth Avenue, and up Fifth to Trump Tower at 56th Street. Streets will be closed to accommodate the March.

Signs: Signs and banners are encouraged with a few caveats. New York City prohibits any signs that use poles, sticks, or handles as they can become weapons. Also, the March organizers would like to remind participants that children and media will be present. Keep it clean and keep it on message. Be creative!

Some slogan ideas can be found here: https://bust.com/feminism/18832-things-to-shout-against-trump.html

We will have Bryn Mawr banners and will likely have a Seven Sisters banner. If you are representing a different school please bring something to identify yourself! We want this to be as inclusive as possible.

Weather and clothing: Right now, a week out, the forecast is in the high 40s and clear. As the route is fairly long and there will be periods of standing be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Thank you and we can't wait to see you on the 21st!
