While registration for the programs below are closed, you can watch all of today's workshops and activities (except for the Washington Ballet Workshop) here: https://npg.si.edu/learn/families/virtual/ FREE! Join the Portrait Gallery in a virtual celebration of women making history! We will explore the online exhibition “Where There Is a Woman There Is Magic,” which highlights leaders in sports, arts, science and activism. It is part of a day-long lineup featuring events and activities for participants of all ages, including workshops, speakers, art activities and more!
The Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. This program will provide live captions. For questions, or to request accommodations such as sign language interpretation, please email Jonesve@si.edu at least two weeks in advance of the program.

Young Portrait Explorers: Althea Gibson

Join our virtual workshop for children ages 3-6 and their adult companions as we learn about art, history and more! Portrait Gallery educators will lead a 30-minute program on Althea Gibson that incorporates close looking at portraiture, movement and art-making.
Story Time with DC Public Library (Julie Packard)

Join the Portrait Gallery and DC Public Library for a story time about ocean conservator and head of Monterey Bay Aquarium, Julie Packard. Explore Julie Packard's portrait and listen to a story about fish and the ocean.
The Washington Ballet Workshop

Join the Washington Ballet as they highlight Maria Tallchief. Learn about the prima ballerina and the role she played in ballet history.
Story Time with DC Public Library (Maria Tallchief)

Join the Portrait Gallery and DC Public Library for a story time about prima ballerina, Maria Tallchief. Look at Maria Tallchief's portrait and listen to a story about ballet and dance.
Open Studio: Carmen Herrera

Enjoy a special Open Studio workshop inspired by artist Carmen Herrera. Portrait Gallery artist-educator Jill Galloway will lead participants through an art-making activity, and talk about Carmen Herrera's work and portrait along the way. Artists of all ages and skill levels are welcome!

Young Adult Book Discussion with DC Public Library

Join the Portrait Gallery and the DC Public Library for a virtual conversation about portraits and prose. Discuss Britton & Patterson’s portrait of the Scottsboro Boys and Juanita Jackson Mitchell from the Portrait Gallery’s collection alongside the book, “On the Come Up” by Angie Thomas.
Virtual Writing Hour: Madam CJ Walker and Alice Dunbar Nelson
3- 4pm EST, Saturday, March 27th 2021
Join us for a virtual creative writing hour. We've set up a space where writers can create, connect and draw inspiration from portraits of Madam CJ Walker and Alice Dunbar Nelson. The Portrait Gallery will provide the writing prompts. Please bring a writing utensil and paper or have your computer or tablet at hand!
