Women's Career at Seattle Tech Startups!
CodeChix Seattle and Digital Eve Seattle invite you to a special evening with lively discussions about Women’s Career in Seattle Tech Startups. We have a great panel of women currently working at some of Seattle’s hottest tech startups, with different educational background, training, experience and career levels. We will explore topics around career planning and development, work/life issues, mentoring and support. You will also have a chance to ask the panelists questions and get their insight and advice on career issues on your mind.
Kristin Acker, VP of Product Teams @ Zillow
Kristin Acker is the Vice President, Product Teams at Zillow. One of the initial members of the Zillow team, Kristin has led Program Management and User Interface Design teams at several companies including Microsoft, PictureIQ, and Pure Networks and led a program management team at Expedia. Her longest tenure was at Microsoft where she worked from 1989 to 2000, primarily on consumer products such as Money, Publisher, Works, and Picture It. Before starting her tech career, she spent a year on the oceans serving on staff for Royal Cruise Line. Kristin attended Stanford where she was a varsity rower and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science. She lives in Lake Forest Park with her husband and three teenage sons.
Kelsey Schlarman, Software Engineer @ LiquidPlanner
Kelsey Schlarman is a software developer and an enthusiastic climber and skier from Seattle. Kelsey grew up in southern Illinois and discovered her love of programming as a high school senior. Kelsey attended the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, majoring in Computer Science. While at UIUC, Kelsey took an active role in Women in Computer Science as well as Chic Tech, an organization aimed at motivating high school women to pursue Computer Science.
After graduating with a BS in Computer Science from UIUC in 2009, Kelsey joined Microsoft as a software development engineer on the User Experience team for the Office products. At Microsoft, Kelsey worked on Office 2010 and Office 2013, and was responsible for a variety of features and UI platform improvements, as well as general visual updates. After wrapping up Office 2013, Kelsey sought new challenges and left Microsoft to experience a smaller company and a more agile development process. Kelsey spent a few months learning Ruby on Rails a full stack web development before joining LiquidPlanner in February. At LiquidPlanner, Kelsey is a software developer focused on Ruby on Rails and full stack web development.
Anushka Anand, Researcher @ Tableau Software
Anushka Anand is a Researcher at Tableau Software, involved in the innovative improvement of their products in the area of statistical computation and visualization. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in May 2012 and her M.Sc. from there in 2006. Her research interests are in visual analytics and data mining. Prior to that, she received her B.Sc. in Computer Science in 2004 from the American University in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
Currently, she serves on the Board of Trustees of the Anita Borg Institute for Women in Technology and in her graduate student career has created and led a Women in Computer Science group garnering her the Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership awards in 2008, 2010 and 2011. She was one of the few graduate student 50 For the Future awardees selected by the Illinois Technology Foundation in September 2011.

Mei Lu is the Founder and CEO of Geekology.biz and Jobfully.com, both focusing on the technology job market. Before starting her own business, Mei recruited top talent for Silicon Valley technology companies, including OpenTable, OutSpark, RockYou and TubeMogul. Mei started her career as a software engineer, building software at Qpass, M.I.T, and MicroStrategy.
She received her Master’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Pennsylvania and her Master’s Degree in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
