Description

Negotiating the Divide: Gender and Salary

Description:
In 1942, the National War Labor Board urged employers in 1942 to voluntarily make "adjustments which equalize wage or salary rates paid to females with the rates paid to males for comparable quality and quantity of work on the same or similar operations." Not only did this volunteer program not work, but when the men returned from the war effort, most women were pushed out of the jobs they held to go back to the home and let the men take over. Until the early 1960s, newspapers published separate job listings for men and women. Jobs were categorized according to sex, with the higher level jobs listed almost exclusively under "Help Wanted—Male." In some cases the ads ran identical jobs under male and female listings—but with separate pay scales. Fast forward to 2017, women still earn less than men in most positions and Equal Pay Day is held yearly to publicize the amount the number of months a woman must work into the next year to make what her male counterpart makes in one year. Recognizing the gender pay gap and understanding our own personal role in bridging this gap is a necessity to remedy this inequity. Why don’t we negotiate? What holds us back from asking for what we want and deserve? How do you find the information about salary that would support your argument? In this session we will explore some of the current problems with suggestions for change both personally and institutionally.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:
1.) Describe the factors that influence the gender gap in your field
2.) Recognize the hesitation that personally have when it comes to negotiating and asking for what you want
3.) Know where to find the tools to determine salary guidelines
4.) Practice negotiation skills
