Event description

Description

Through a series of questions and discussions between speakers and clear “to-do” items, musicians will come away from the workshop with the knowledge to book their own shows, maximize the amount of money they can make, build a local following with local shows, and book gigs in new markets.

Some of the topics covered in the workshop will include: making sure you get paid, booking shows in a city you haven’t played before, pitching to venues, promoters, and non-traditional venues, how to go up a level in venue size, opening for bigger artists as a strategy, and more if we have the time!

Bring your laptop, phone, or pen and notebook to this hands-on workshop with actionable steps for musicians and music industry professionals to effectively book shows.

This is for musicians and music industry professionals of all levels and experience. Everyone is welcome.

About the Speakers

Sarah Sexton (General Manager Bandcamp, Talent Buyer Starline Social Club, Co-Founder of OIM)

Sarah Sexton is the owner of Oaktown Indie Mayhem & Co-founder of OIM Records. She has been a talent buyer for a variety of Oakland music venues – most recently at Starline Social Club, a curator for music festivals & crawls throughout the Oakland area and a minion for AEG Live. Most recently she is honored to be the Oakland General Manager for Bandcamp. When she’s not starting record labels, she’s off causing trouble, trying not to get caught, and never saying sorry.

Sandra (Musician, Bells Atlas)

Soulful noise pop, inspired, propellent psych-pop… Trying to nail down the sound of Bells Atlas is a bit like narrating the inner workings of a kaleidoscope – where it's more about tripping out than nailing it down.

A surreal blend of r&b, psychedelia, jazz, and pop, rooted in the cultural bellwether of Oakland, CA, Bells Atlas has supported a number of international artists and shared the stage with acts such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Badbadnotgood, Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, W. Kamau Bell, Angélique Kidjo and more. They have also been making a name for themselves nationally as the touring band for NPR’s Snap Judgment since 2016, and recently wrapped up a sold-out tour supporting Bermuda Triangle, side-project of Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard.
