Immigrants In Texas: Two Reports From the Front Lines

with Michael Benavides, TeamBrownsville and Jill Nokes

Michael Benavides has been called “the heart and soul” of TeamBrownsville, Inc.

Michael was born and raised 26 miles from the Texas border, in San Benito, TX. He is a disabled Army veteran, a public school administrator (with the special education department), a former missionary to the Dominican Republic, a current resident of Brownsville, a founding member of TeamBrownsville, a board member of TeamBrownsville, Inc. and an all around good guy!

While having been involved with every aspect of the work TeamBrownsville, Michael currently “manages” the breakfast portion of the bridge work. He single handily started serving breakfast across the bridge to the asylum seekers in January 2018 and funded it from his own funds until it was taken into TBI in May 2018! For the better part of a year, Michael crossed the bridge twice a day (and often more frequently) to assist the asylum seekers who were stranded in a Plaza before the bridge. The asylum seekers have learned to know, respect and trust him.

Jill Nokes: I am a landscape designer, author, and land conservation management consultant. Most of my professional life has been devoted to the study and use of native plants in both the built landscape and in the wild places where they are found. My training began with undergraduate studies at the University of Texas, followed by a master's degree in horticulture from Texas A&M University. As a landscape designer, I served both residential and commercial clients. About 10 years ago, I began to focus more on public park advocacy, and consulting with people who own rural property to help them become better stewards of the land. I have also written two books: How to Grow Native Plants in Texas and the Southwest, and Yard Art and Handmade Places. Since retiring, my interests continue to include public parks, voter registration, immigration reform, and support of migrants. I am also a grandmother and matriarch of a large, unruly family. If only they would take my advice more often!

Please click on the links below for some resource material. One is an essay I wrote earlier this year about my experiences visiting detainees at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center. The other is a list of organizations that are serving migrants. People frequently ask, “What can I do?” If you don’t speak Spanish, you can send a check! is my answer. or both!
