~Natasha's Story~

In November of 2016 Natasha found a small lump on her breast. After setting up an appointment with her Dr., she was told that it was nothing to be worried about and that it was just a benign tumor known as fibroadenoma. After four months of monitoring and tests, ultra sounds, and mammograms multiple doctors were still certain that it was still just a benign tumor which could be removed by surgery. In early March Natasha also found out that she was pregnant. On March 8th she got a phone call from the doctor saying that she needed to be seen immediately and that afternoon Natasha was told that she has breast cancer. At her first meeting with her oncologist they were told that her cancer was very aggressive and she needed to start treatments immediately. Due to the medications and treatments it was not safe for her to continue working. She was also told that with the cancer treatments she would have to terminate her pregnancy, but she had a miscarriage before she could even make that decision.

Since starting her chemotherapy she developed meningitis, had a lumbar puncture and has had several viral infections. With her diminished immune system she has to avoid the general public as much as possible and limits her activities to avoid getting infections that can be very hazardous to her. She’s tried to claim sickness benefits through work, but was told she did not have enough working hours to qualify. She applied for CPP benefits, but didn’t qualify because she has not been disabled long enough. She applied for ODSP but they were told that due to her boyfriends income she likely would not be approved for that either. She is currently on a waiting list to see a social worker from the cancer centre in Ottawa to explore any other options. They are looking for financial assistance to help keep them on their feet so Natasha can focus on fighting her cancer and not worrying about how she’ll pay her bills.
