About this event

On October 7, 2022 the Military Women’s Memorial will launch a new quarterly program - the Women, Peace, and Security Series. The October 7th premier event will feature a fireside chat with retired Army General Austin S. Miller, former U.S. Forces Afghanistan commander, followed by a panel discussion with members of the U.S. Cultural Support Teams (CST) who served in Afghanistan as well as Afghan women who served in the Female Tactical Platoon (FTP): a female-only platoon, trained and advised by U.S. Special Forces, attached to the elite Ktah Khas unit of the Afghan Special Security Forces.

The event will culminate with a portrait unveiling and reception honoring Senior Chief Petty Officer, Shannon Kent, USN, who was killed in a suicide attack in Syria in 2019 while serving with a U.S. Special Operations task force.

The Military Women’s Memorial (MWM) is well positioned to be a leading voice and resource in support of the U.S. Strategy on Women, Peace & Security and its implementation. MWM’s approach is to place the unique perspectives and experiences of servicewomen at the forefront of discussions with practitioners, scholars, and leaders from across public and private sectors, as well as partner nations, to better understand the essential role of women in global security and defense efforts, and to work toward gender equality for future generations at home and around the globe. In order to influence change and inform policy, MWM will be a platform for inclusive dialogue and discussion around important topics that directly impact servicewomen, our nation’s security, and the stability of our partner nations.
