Event description

Description

Women of the Global South & their Diasporas: Rights, Representation, Activism

Where and When: 5 June 2018, times TBC, Parkinson Building, University of Leeds
Keynote: Dr Nirmal Puwar (Goldsmiths University)

Event rationale: Women’s Paths’ symposium aims to explore how feminist scholarship and practice might coalesce to create real change for women. Our symposium focuses on urgent issues that are detrimentally affecting women residing in the Global South. We bring together scholars researching across a range of disciplines to form a multidisciplinary approach to how we might cooperatively confront a number of complex problems. Our symposium addresses three key strands: 1) BAME women’s rights, 2) Feminisms and racialised oppression, and 3) Diasporic identity and representation in the UK. Topics to be discussed in the papers include structural sexism and racism, violence against women, and indigenous women’s activism.

This event is was made possible by the Postcolonial Studies Association and British Sociological Association’s Diaspora, Migration and Transnationalism (DMT) study group.
