Event description

Description

The history of women in jazz is a rich and extensive one, going back to the beginnings of this indigenous American art form. However, despite much progress and a deep bench of contemporary talent, women are still a minority in jazz.

Up-and-coming jazz artists, ages 16 to 21, are invited to participate for a week of FREE music-making, networking, and mentoring in Detroit, Michigan, July 15 through 20, 2019. A Knight Foundation Arts Challenge project winner, the "Women of Jazz" Symposium will be led by acclaimed Detroit jazz artist, bandleader, and bassist Marion Hayden. Hayden will share her own journey and life experiences to empower young jazz musicians and lead educational events open to the public.

Presented by the MSU Community Music School-Detroit, symposium activities are free for the selected pre-professional and new professional musicians. Next-generation artists will enjoy workshop activities and play the music of leading women who’ve made their historic mark on jazz. The Symposium ends with a reception and concert at Detroit’s historic St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, located at 8850 Woodward Avenue, on Saturday July 20 at 3 p.m.

Because Knight Arts funds are provided as challenge grants requiring matching support, CMS-D invites the public to help underwrite the Women of Jazz project through an online MSU CrowdPower campaign. Proceeds will be used to provide stipends for the local and national women jazz artists invited to participate in symposium events. Tax deductible gifts can be made online at www.givingto.msu.edu/crowdpower/detroit-cms-women-of-jazz.

Tickets for the "Women of Jazz" Symposium are $30. Tickets for the performance only on July 20 are and $15. The public can RSVP via email or through Eventbrite. You can purchase tickets at the door or online at: https://commerce.cashnet.com/cashneti/selfserve/BrowseCatalog.aspx?CNAME=5120 Students with a student ID can enter for free.
