Event description

Description

We're very pleased to welcome Malu Halasa, Jordanian Filipina American writer and editor, to CCAS for two public lectures; in this first one, Ms. Halasa will discuss female artistic voices in Syria -- the ways they have been challenged and the ways they have overcome.

Six years after the 2011 uprising in Syria, the present status of women in Syria is as fractured as the war-torn country itself. In Kurdish Rojava, women are soldiers; in “liberated” enclaves, many are political and social leaders; while in once cultured al-Raqqa, the ISIS capital since 2014, they are barely seen at all. Meanwhile, the boldest and most challenging female artistic voices are heard outside Syria, following the flight of at least 4.8 million refugees abroad and the estimated 8 million internally displaced."

Ms. Halasa will explore these issues in her talk and will give these creative voices the platform they have so lacked in the past. We hope you can join us for what is sure to be an illuminating and important evening.

The CCAS Boardroom is wheelchair accessible. If you have any further accommodation requests, please don't hesitate to contact Azza Altiraifi at aa1967@georgetown.edu.
