Event description

Description

Women in Harmony, Portland’s 60-voice feminist community chorus, presents its winter concert, “The Right to Vote,” on January 17 and 18, 2020.

This concert commemorates the centennial of the 19th Constitutional amendment, which in 1920 gave women the right to vote. The first half of the program features historical songs from the suffrage era, such as The League of Women Voters by Mrs. P.D. Owens, and Suffrage Song by Eleanor Smith. It also includes songs about activists of the time: Emma and May by Linda Allen, and Nana Was a Suffragette by Jules Gibb. The half concludes with Gwyneth Walker’s musical celebration of sheroes of the past who fought for the suffrage and women’s rights in general.

The latter half of the concert addresses voting rights and the importance of exercising the franchise. As a highlight, Women in Harmony accompanist Deana Gurney has arranged Willie Nelson’s Vote ‘Em Out, incorporating the gospel song Change This Land by Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Civil rights songs from the 1950s and ‘60s, especially those protesting the disenfranchisement of African-Americans, round out the concert program.

Audiences will recognize favorites like Sam Cooke’s A Change is Gonna Come, Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready, and We Shall Overcome.

Now 25 years old, Women in Harmony is an affirming and inclusive community of women who sing for social justice and the joy of making and performing music together. For this concert, Women in Harmony partners with the Maine Suffrage Centennial Collaborative, a group of diverse organizations dedicated to commemorating this historic anniversary.

Performances will take place on Friday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 18 at 4:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. Tickets will be available at Longfellow Books, Portland; Starbird Music, Portland; Nonesuch Books, South Portland; and online at www.wihmaine.org.
