Event description

Description

Women in Harmony, Portland’s 60-voice women’s chorus, presents its spring concert, “Journeys" on May 4th and 5th 2019 at South Portland Congregational Church. The concert addresses both literal and metaphorical aspects of journeying. On the literal side, we present Long Time Traveller, arranged by the Wailin’ Jennys, the classic and unforgettable Choo Choo Ch’Boogie as performed by Manhattan Transfer, and the Southern Harmony hymn The Road Home, arranged by Stephen Paulus. Finally, Connie Kaldor’s rousing boogie-woogie song Wanderlust, arranged by J. David Moore, tells about what happens when a woman really needs to hit the road.

Because a woman’s discovery that it is time to pack her bags generally coincides with a shift in her sense of self, this program also focuses on identity, both as something firmly settled and as an evolving reality. We address this “being who you are” theme with pieces such as We Are, This is Me, Dress Like a Woman, and Truly Brave.

Truth by Andrea Ramsey is a springboard to another aspect of the concert, Nature and our connection to it. In the text of Truth, poet Gardenia Bruce writes “my roots are earth, muddy water and honeysuckle”, and goes on to explore the growth of a young woman into her own identity. Also included in that set are Aurora Borealis by Amy F. Bernon, Water is Life (and song from Standing Rock), and River by Joan Szymko, in which “river” has the dual meaning of a body of water and a current of fast-moving social and political change.

All of these threads—travel, self-identity, and nature—come together in a tapestry of music that reflects the multiple aspects of journeying.
