Event description

Description

Women in Harmony, Portland’s 60-voice women’s chorus, presents its winter concert, “Hope,” on January 18 and 19, 2019 at Woodfords Congregational Church.

The concert program explores the closely linked concepts of hope and resilience. Its overarching message is that, by withstanding tribulation and resisting hatred together, we can turn the tide towards hope. Song topics range from survival of abuse—as women tell their stories and and vow “No more” in to Me Too— to Harriett Tubman, lifeline for escaping slaves.

Other notable pieces include Ruth Huber’s Signs: Voices from the Women's March, a choral setting of the signs people carried at the Women's March on Washington in 2017; Hope by Ysaye Barnwell (formerly of Sweet Honey in the Rock); and Dolly Parton’s Light of a Clear Blue Morning, as arranged by Craig Hella Johnson.

A feminist chorus now 25 years old, Women in Harmony stands up for social justice and aims to exert a positive impact on the world through its traditions of song and community initiative.

Performances take place on Friday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 19 at 4:00 p.m., 202 Woodford Street, Portland. Tickets are available at Longfellow Books and Starbird Music in Portland, and Nonesuch Books in South Portland, as well as online at www.wihmaine.org and at the door. $12 advance, $15/door, $10 student/senior.
