Data Specialists vs Generalists: What it takes to build a successful data team

What’s the difference between a data specialist and generalist? If you are building a data team, should you hire generalists or specialists? If you are starting out in your career, should you specialize or absorb general knowledge?

Many of today's data positions require highly specific skills. Some employers require knowledge of a particular programming language or tool set. Others expect a Ph.D. and significant academic background in machine learning and statistics. However, there are a growing number of companies who believe in hiring “full stack data scientists” — generalists — that can perform diverse functions: from conception to modeling to implementation to communicating insights to the business.

Join us as we discuss the topic of Data Generalist versus Specialist and hear perspectives from notable panel speakers. We are thrilled to have Rupinder Dhillon (Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at Bell Canada), Susan Davis (VP of Engineering at Dessa), Indrani Gorti (Senior Manager of Enterprise Analytics at CIBC) and Sabina Stanescu (Principal Data Scientist at Altair engineering) join us on the panel.

PANELISTS

Susan Davis is the VP of Engineering at Dessa. She has long track records of managing software engineering teams for companies like Freshbooks, Amazon, and Lightbend. Her move to being a coach and manager was instigated by the experience in her last couple of positions as a software developer, where she saw the contrasting dynamics and outcomes of a floundering 150-person Waterfall department to a 15-person team successfully accomplishing a similar size project within weeks. She is an advocate of Agile principles and has worked for many years as an Agile coach.

Indrani Gorti is a Senior Manager of Enterprise Advanced Analytics at CIBC. Previously, she worked as a data scientist and data engineer in the banking and communications sector, including Bell Canada and Nuance Communications. She has worked in end-to-end projects involving model building, data engineering, and data delivery on cloud platforms. Indrani is also an instructor at University of Toronto, where she teaches a course in Big Data Management Systems and Tools.

Rupinder Dhillon is an experienced leader in shaping and delivering Enterprise BI and Analytics Data strategies. She is currently the Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at Bell Canada. Her expertise spans across multiple industries in telecommunications, banking and consulting.

Sabina Stanescu's love for statistics and data brought her on an unconventional journey from academia to Data Science in industry. Sabina completed her MSc in Plant Ecology at the University of Guelph, after which she started her journey in Data Science at Angoss Software. Sabina is currently the Principal Data Scientist at Altair engineering, working with a team of Data Scientists to solve a wide variety of Data Science problems across different industries and use cases.
