Event description

Description

We are three NYU Silver School of Social Work Masters of Social Work Candidates of 2018. Patrice James, Whitnique Small and Unique Starks studying criminal justice reform, multi level systems surrounding children and families within a justice involved infrastructure and school mental health and juvenile justice. We serve in various leadership roles through the Silver School of Social Work and NYU at large. One of which is the executive board of the Black Women’s Social Work Coalition within the Silver School of Social Work. We created the Women Beyond the Bars iniative to raise awareness of the rising number of Black and Latina women who are experiencing the traumatic systems of incarceration.

The intended impact of this conference is to spread awareness around the issues that produce hyper incarceration in America and and how they specifically affect women who are justice involved in NYC. The conference will be segmented into four portions:

1. History of Mass Incarceration and its impact on Black and Brown Communities

2. Experiences of Women who have experienced incarceration

3. Current work as students within social work who are involved in criminal justice and prison reform to combat systems that affect the target population

4. Current work and community organizing; methods of getting students involved to further establish justice for women and families impacted by the criminal justice system and hyper incarceration.

Guest speakers include: Kirk James, Alicia White, Anna Morgan-Mullane, Cheryl Wilkins, Terrence Coffie, Jasmine Bent, Stephanie Powell, Ashley Santiague, Karen Garrido, Monroe Howard, and many more powerful people.
