Workshop: Womanhood, Femininity & Faith

Description: This 3-day workshop is intended for women and girls to explore the meaning of womanhood, femininity, and faith through various texts, lectures, and discussions. We will pay special attention to: the representation of the ideal woman within the Islamic faith, the role of modesty (not just clothes) in preserving femininity, how women’s goals, life decisions, and even communication styles differ from men, and the role of motherhood in a woman’s life and how this valued contribution to society has at times been praised and at other times been demeaned.

Goal: The goal of this 3-day workshop in for women to better understand themselves outside of the mainstream narratives. Unfortunately, in modern society, much of what was once sacred about womanhood has been lost in the constant urge to be “equal” to men. This workshop is meant to explore what it means and has meant to be a woman outside of superficial rhetoric that we can “do everything men can do”. We want to explore the distant feelings, voices, contributions and even relationship to God that women have. We hope everyone will leave this 3-day workshop better able to say, “I’m a woman” with all the depth and honor it affords.

Cost: $85, cost includes light refreshments and materials (Live workshop). $25, Livestream access. The cost covers the entire three days of the workshop. Includes access to audio recordings up to one month after the live event.

Format: Each workshop day is two hours (class begins and end promptly). This first hour is a lecture on the day’s subject. The second-hour we work together to understand the topic and use our personal knowledge/ experience to deepen our understanding. Students are highly encouraged to take scrupulous notes, discussion participation is a must to truly benefit from this workshop.

Date/Time: October 6th (Friday, 6- 8pm), October 7th (Saturday: 12noon- 2pm), October 8th (Sunday 12noon- 2pm)

Location: Workshop will take place in New York City, exact location will only be given to registered and paid participants.

Note on class size: We can only accommodate a small group of participants for the workshop, please register and pay early to ensure your slot.

Motherhood: Do women have a distinct maternal instinct? How is this effected within a capitalist society?
