Description

Come at 7:30am for networking. One-hour presentation begins at 8:00am.

Presenters:

Gary Kubat, Director of Communications, Orono Public Schools
On February 21-22, 2018, when back-to-back threats rocked Orono Schools, the district was well situated to address the one threat determined to be credible. Learn how Orono Schools used the three Ps – Proactive, Prepared and Productive – to take action before the crisis hit, as well as to guide its efforts during and after the crisis. Its strategy resulted in successfully communicating and reassuring stakeholders as events unfolded, while simultaneously building trust in and appreciation of the organization and its leadership. There will be time to ask questions and share insights, plus you’ll leave with copies of materials that can be adapted for your organization.

Michael Schommer, Director of Communications, Minnesota Department of Health
From April to August 2017, Minnesota public health officials grappled with the state’s largest outbreak of measles in decades. The outbreak drew national attention and raised awareness of the ongoing challenge of declining vaccination rates – particularly in certain populations and communities – fueled by misperceptions about vaccine benefits and risks. The story of how the Minnesota Department of Health and its many partners ultimately stopped the outbreak offers insights into the importance of community relationships and culturally appropriate outreach.
