WITNESSING WITHIN THE CIRCLE SCREENING
What does it mean to document history from the inside? Over the past year, mainstream media has been providing a narrative about Standing Rock to the public that leaves out the intimate stories of indigenous history, practiced values and community. Artists Tiana LaPointe & Binesikwe Means will present a series of documentary shorts reflective of these experience and facilitate a discussion about the role of indigenous filmmakers as historians.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has created an historic and groundbreaking community of spirituality and resistance at Oceti Sakowin Camp. This global gathering of indigenous nations and allies has received national attention as they stand strong in peaceful and prayerful protection of water and land against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).
People of this sovereign nation have created a home for all that visited and chose to stand with their commitment to stop the DAPL pipeline efforts. Their efforts continue today as the pipeline is still not completed. Those that stood with Standing Rock have raised our awareness of the sacredness of water and the power of gathering together in changing colonizing attitudes and behavior.
Over the past months, many In Progress artists, friends and family members made the effort to travel and witness the Standing Rock movement. They came back to In Progress with stories of community and sharing and often a deeper appreciation of traditional values. These stories affected us, gave us hope, and opened our eyes to the sacrifices of all the water protectors at camp. The power of peacefully and prayerfully standing together in a unified message is what "Honoring the Protectors" exhibit series is about.
Please join In Progress as we acknowledge the experience of these travelers through their photo and video works, and continue the efforts to educate and raise awareness about Indigenous rights in the United States.
