Description

Tennessee Aquatics Project (TAP), Youth Diving With a Purpose (YDWP), and the International Black Film Festival of Nashville (IBFF) are partnering to present “With Purpose; Celebrating and Discovering African American History from Sky to Sea" on Saturday, February 24 from 10am to 2pm at Watkins College of Art. The event will feature the screening of the documentary With Purpose as well as provide related hands-on STEAM activities to youth from underserved communities in the Metro Nashville Area. As a story of young African-American divers engaged in marine archaeology, With Purpose provides a unique perspective of African-American history.

Film Synopsis

With Purpose follows the journey of 14 inner city kids from across the United States as they continue a search that has been ongoing for the last 15 years. They are searching for the slave ship Guerrero, sunk off the coast of Florida in 1827 with 561 captured Africans on board. The search started in 2003 with the group Diving With a Purpose and now continues with the group Youth Diving With a Purpose. After searching for the last 5 years, with new information, YDWP may now have finally found the prize they have sought for so long. Never in history has a group of young people under the age of 21 found and documented a wreck of this importance.
