Description

Event Information:

WISE Wednesday is a networking event for women in technology who are interested in building new relationships and growing their networks. Come and connect with female and male technology leaders, influencers and innovators in the greater Charlotte region. We look forward to meeting you!

This WISE Wednesday will be spent with guest Celine Latulipe, UNCC Associate Professor for the College of Computing and Informatics, who will spend 30 minutes discussing topics related to her current research and design of education techniques within the field of Computer Science. Her talk will begin promptly at 6 pm and will be available for questions/discussion after.

Discussion Topic:

Dr. Latulipe will give a demo of teaching programming to urban youth using a free, web-based music-programming app called EarSketch that was designed by computer scientists and musicologists at Georgia Tech. By programmatically placing, sequencing and repeating music samples on a digital audio workstation using JavaScript or Python, students learn programming concepts such as variables, constants, branching, looping and functions through the creation of their own musical masterpieces. Students are motivated to create great music because the program enables sharing through SoundCloud. She will also talk about how the new pedagogical techniques being employed at UNC Charlotte are designed to engage women and under-represented minorities in computing.

Biography:

Celine Latulipe conducts research in the broad area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), focusing on novel interaction techniques, creativity support tools, technology for the Arts, and innovation in computing education. Dr. Latulipe has received significant NSF funding for research in computing and computing education. She led the transformation of introductory computing courses in CCI, inventing the Lightweight Teams approach to flipped classroom learning. Dr. Latulipe served as the General Chair for the ACM UIST Conference in 2015, and has served on numerous conference program committees within the HCI field. She was the keynote speaker at the ACM Creativity & Cognition Conference in 2013 and at the University of Maryland’s Innovation in Teaching Conference in 2016.
