Event description

Description

Meet new people, maybe bring along a friend, explore new films and new ways of making in the surroundings of Armley Mills and its cinema, as well as working with friendly staff and artists. Everyone is welcome.

Leeds Industrial Museum and Leeds Art Gallery bring you a special series of free film screenings, workshops and food. While Leeds Art Gallery is closed to the public we will be hosting the rarely seen film collection at Armley Mills cinema, along with artist-led workshops designed to get everyone making and talking... and there’ll be tea and cake of course!

Our final film of the programme is a series of 24 short films that make up Winterriese by Mariele Neudecker, accompanied by Schubert’s harshly beautiful song cycle of the same name. The films were made as a collaboration with Opera North and follows the line of latitude 60 degrees north, crossing a snow-covered Europe from the Shetland Islands to St Petersburg. Meanwhile, the songs chart the physical and psychological journey of a rejected lover through a frozen landscape. The combination is compelling.

You don’t need to be an opera buff to enjoy this film, just get lost in the landscape and the music, get swept away by the chapters of a story and stick around afterwards for tea, cake and a chat with staff & artists.
