Description

Winter Warming at Waterperry

Join us for a special day of yoga to recharge and renew after the busy festive holidays.

We feel very privileged to be offering this day retreat in Waterperry House, just outside Oxford. The interior is decorated with art illustrating some of the ancient yoga scriptures. We will practice in the airy ballroom before open fires.

The workshop is inspired by a range of sources and flows from our many teachers. Swami Sivananda, in whose lineage we trained, encouraged all his teachers to adjust, adapt and accommodate. The ancient teachings embrace new challenges and changes to make yoga relevant and useful to everyone in their daily life.

Postures, pranayama and meditation

Netia’s teaching is based on empowering the individual to develop a practice that can become an instinctive moving meditation. She uses the framework developed by Swami Vishnudevananda, who was sent from India to the west by his master, Sivananda, because, ‘People are waiting.’ Following sun salutations, variations on 12 key postures are adapted to each individual. Pranayama, yoga breathing exercises, are integral. Meditation is taught very simply, with an understanding that the benefits come best with no expectation. Laura will lead a ‘slow and low’ class after lunch with some more therapeutic practices and space for intuitive movement and stillness.

Teaching on our Winter Warming at Waterperry will be best suited for people who have some experience of yoga, if only a few classes, and wish to go deeper into their practice. It's not suitable for complete beginners.

Sound and Chanting

Whether you are new to chanting or already a lover of Kirtan, Laura’s approach is inclusive and gentle. She fosters an atmosphere of deep listening and heartfelt connection. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to understand just how supportive voice work can be to your yoga and meditation practice. Laura also weaves poetry and silence into the practice to create a deeply reflective and contemplative space.

If you have a passage, poem or song that you would like to share, please bring it along as there will be space for sharing with the group for those that wish to.

Food and Refreshments

This day will include a delicious warming lunch.

Herbal teas and healthy snacks will be available throughout the day.

Please bring your favourite mug and a bottle for water.

About the facilitators, Netia Prema Mayman and Laura Sewell

Netia discovered yoga in 1988 when her mother encouraged her to use yoga to recover from ME/Chronic fatigue syndrome. Her mum is 85 and still has a more disciplined practice than Netia does. Sivananda yoga helped Netia to heal. After practising different styles of yoga she reconnected with her original lineage in India in 2014 but still works with other teachers regularly. She now spends time in Sivananda ashrams two or three times a year to renew the source of her early learning, most recently on advanced teacher training.

Laura’s yoga practice has spanned many different schools and teachers, and her practice deepened as a result of seeking a more balanced lifestyle. Through yoga, she discovered techniques to support her to be a more relaxed, healthy and happy person and she loves to share these practices with others. After practicing yoga and meditations for many years, Laura trained in Sri Swami Satchidananda's Integral Yoga, another student of Sivananda, to become a teacher in 2015.

It was through yoga that she discovered the power of sound vibrations and voice work. Singing and chanting are now an important part of Laura’s daily life. Laura is always learning from specialists in this field, most notably Chloe Goodchild’s who leads The Naked Voice.

Netia and Laura began their work together when Netia was the head of the Virtual School for Looked After Children and Laura worked as an artist facilitator with a group of young women in a care home. In a turn of serendipity, in 2015, they took redundancy and a life-changing opportunity to train as yoga teachers. They went on to co-found Yoga in Schools which has since been taken over by a national organisation.

Travel

Waterperry is close to the Thornhill park and ride stop for anyone arriving on the coach from London. From Oxford you can take the Arriva 280 bus to Wheatley. From both these stops you need to pre-book a taxi to the village of Waterperry 2 miles away. The facilitators can also put you in touch with other participants who can provide lifts from various parts of Oxford.
