About this event
In this class you will learn to identify winter trees using small- and large-scale observations of tree characteristics. We'll focus on trees common in DC's woodlands and streets, with the goal that you will be able to observe these trees through the winter and into spring in your own neighborhoods.
The first half of class will be held on zoom. I will use photos and samples to illustrate the kinds of observations that lead to confident tree ID. The second half will move outdoors for an in-person walk to apply our skills to real trees. The outdoor portion will be divided into two groups so that each is limited to 10 participants. Choose ONE session for your ticket:
- Saturday 1/2/21 from 1:00-3:30pm
- Sunday 1/3/21 from 11am to 12:30pm.
Masks and distancing are required for the in-person sessions, so bring the covid skills you have all become so good at in 2020!
The outdoor portion of the class will involve some walking but we spend significant time standing, so dress in several warm layers with hats, scarf, gloves. Standing usually feels colder than you expect! Bring water and snacks if you will need them.
This class is offered on a sliding scale-- please read the descriptions and choose the option that is affordable for you. Keep in mind that paying the higher price makes it possible for me to offer the low-income price! Please consider privilege and access to resources in addition to income when choosing your ticket. Free tickets are reserved for people who cannot reasonably afford to pay (for example, people subsisting on disability, fixed-income seniors, pepole who are unable to find work, returning citizens, low-income people supporting dependents, etc). If you are low/no income by choice (for example, student, intern, choosing not to work, or choosing to work part time) please choose a paid ticket. For a more detailed description of sliding scale considerations please see www.littleredbirdbotanicals.com/consultation-fees.
In case of cold rain this event will be cancelled (with full refund) or rescheduled (option for refund if you can't make the rain date).
Accessibility info: the in-person sessions will be held in an area with some paved access but in order to access trees we will move off of the paved areas onto level grass. If this presents a challenge to you please contact me to discuss whether accommodations I can make will be sufficient for you to participate.
