ABOUT THE WINTER SOLSTICE NIGHT EXHIBITION:

The Winter Solstice is a night exhibition and cross-disciplinary event happening in Oslo during the longest night of the year, initiated in 2012 by Hanan Benammar. Since 2015, Vandaler Forening has been arranging it. Vandaler Forening is a collective initiative formed by several art practionners. Previous collaborators for this event are: Martinka Bobrikova, Oscar De Carmen, Bård E. Dahl, Senta Rebecca, Jan Moss and many more.

The event aims to gather the local audience around various practices of both emerging and established artists, offering a unique opportunity to experience an exhibition through the night combined with performances, concerts, poetry, video screenings, plays and even yoga sessions.

Since its beginning in 2012, the event has gathered over 80 different artists and performers. Many of the works were presented at the Winter Solstice for the first time and later shown again in prominent art exhibitions. Our event therefore functions clearly as a space of pro-ject: as throwing something towards the future.

Together with PNEK, we will for the second time give From Dusk Till Dawn Art Prize to a participating artist based in Norway.

We especially put an effort in highlighting experimental and time-based practices. Even if the exhibition is open only during one night, many of the works demand to stay in the space for some time.

This event is inspired by the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, initiated in 1963 by the cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman, as well as pre-christian pagan traditions such as Yule and Modranicht.
More than focusing on darkness, we celebrate the return of the light.

NB: Booking required!

Supported by Kulturrådet, NOTAM and PNEK. Vandaler forening's organisation is supported by Kulturetaten.
