Event description

Description

Winter Evening Watercolor Open Studio

Students have the option to paint using class exercise with an original painting, photographs, and step-by-step instructions, or choose their own subjects. In all cases, small class size ensures individual guidance from the instructor. The goal is to ease students starting watercolor and getting comfortable with various brush techniques and materials. Experienced painters are shown ways of enhancing their existing skills and improving designs.

Gain watercolor skills while having fun creating landscape, city-scapes and still life. Instructor provides weekly step-by-step exercises and photographs, or you can work with your own subjects. Small classes ensure one-on-one instructor assistance in expanding your watercolor skills. A list of suggested watercolor materials is listed below.

Class dates/times: Tuesdays, January 14, 21m 28, February 4, 11, and 18, 2019. 6-8PM

Instructor: Tony Neville, www.tonyneville.net

Testimonial:
"I have been Tony's watercolor student for over five years now. Because of Tony's amazing instruction, I am now painting pictures that I am proud to display. AND, I am even signing them, because of his encouragement. Tony has a very special way with his students; he advises us wisely, helpfully, and oh so very gently that we can all take in his suggestions for improvements and yet feel no criticism. I will continue to take lessons from him as long as he is available." C. Warkentin.

"Tony Neville's watercolor classes offer the opportunity to paint beautiful landscapes, while learning the fundamental techniques and approaches of watercolor. Each week, Tony provides a snapshot (from Maine to Washington, and Switzerland and beyond), along with his painted version of the photo, as well as a written guide with steps for producing the painting. Tony also provides students his thoughts and suggestions as they paint during the class, or when presenting other practice work. Highly recommended for anybody looking to try something new, or wanting to improve their skills!" ~Dave

Age requirements: 16 and older.

SUGGESTED WATERCOLOR CLASS MATERIALS:

Here are examples of useful web sites to order from: www.PlazaArt.com, www.cheapjoes.com, www.blick.com

Plaza Arts in Vienna, VA or 19th St N.W.; AC Moore in Baileys Crossroads and Micheals at Seven Corners Mall are examples of local stores
1. Arches Watercolor Paper, 140 lbs. cold press, also in blocks of 20 watercolor sheets.

3. Artist tape, 1/2“wide.

4. Pencils, #2 Pencils.

5. Grey putty eraser. Avoid pink erasers that discolor paper.

6. Watercolor brush types and sizes (not hogs hair or bristle brushes for acrylic): round #3, #12, ¾” flat, Additional options include rigger #1 (small brush with long hair). Plaza Art has its own set of slightly cheaper brushes. Avoid packages of cheap brushes.

7. Paper towels: Viva recommended for absorbency.

8. Small spray bottle, 3 oz. (at any hardware store).

9. Palette: Paint saver palette by Loew Cornell #385, or John Pike palette.

10. Watercolor Winsor Newton artist quality 0.17 fl. oz.tubes: Cotman’s watercolors to be avoided if possible. With cost being a consideration, I suggest buying fewer artist quality tubes rather than student quality. I suggest QoR, Daniel Smith, or Winsor Newton manufacturers of artist quality paint.

Basic selection: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, French Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, Light Red, and Indigo. Get the smallest sized tubes.

All the following colors are optional: Cobalt Blue, Raw Sienna, Alizarin Crimson (permanent), Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Titanium White, and Neutral Tint.

QoR, Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton Watercolors have been proven for transparency and brilliancy.
