Description

Winter Croc Fest December 9, 2017

Save the Date for Winter CrocFest to benefit the Cuban Crocodile."The organizers of CrocFest are proud to announce that Winter CrocFest 2017 will take place on Saturday, 9 December 2017, at St Augustine Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, Florida! The beneficiary will be the Cuban crocodile, Crocodylus rhombifer, in Zapata Swamp, Cuba. A comprehensive conservation project has been proposed by Natalia Rossi, PhD, with WCS, Frank Mazzotti, PhD, with UF FLREC (the Croc Docs!), and Toby Ramos and Rey Estrada in Cuba. Toby is among the foremost leading Cuban croc experts in the world! Their project involves reintroductions and monitoring of captive produced C. rhombifer to bolster the population, into safe, remote areas of Zapata Swamp where there are no people. Efforts will be made to minimize/prevent hybridization with C. acutus as the proposed release areas are less suitable for C. acutus. Further, the reintroduced animals will be monitored to determine how they adjust to their new environment. In addition, the issue of poaching will be studied and led by Rey – expert in biodiversity conservation and long-involved in crocodile conservation in Zapata Swamp - to determine the best strategy to combat this threat. Finally, a campaign will be re-initiated to raise public awareness about the conservation of this critically endangered, charismatic species.
