Build a Banks Dory with Graham McKay

February 5th to March 3rd

Mondays 5:30-9, Thursdays 5:30-9pm and Saturdays, 8am-2pm *note no class Saturday Feb 10

$750 per person (10% discount for members)

Non-Refundable $250 deposit required

The entire class will build one boat which is raffled off at the end to a class member who then only has to pay for the cost of materials.

Graham will use John Gardner’s The Dory Book as a construction guide through the course. The dory will be built from traditional methods with the bottom and topsides planked in northern white pine and the frames, stem, and other parts made of white oak. Laps will be secured with copper rivets, and the frames will be joined at the chines with riveted stainless-steel clips.

Using traditional Lowell’s building methods, lofting will be minimal, using traditional patterns and notes and planking by eye. The dory will be built upright so that plank lines can be sighted and the rivets easily reached. By the end of the course, the hull should be completely planked and the inwales bent into place and fastened.

Graham will cover building from plans, copper-riveting, caulking, spiling, beveling and lap fitting, steam-bending, and other traditional skills. This will be a fast-moving, exciting class where everyone will be actively involved. And if you’re lucky in the class lottery, you could be the winner of a beautiful, new banks dory!

Lowell's Boat Shop

A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND WORKING MUSEUM

BOAT BUILDING - EDUCATION - EXHIBITS - ROWING

Established in 1793, Lowell's Boat Shop is the oldest continuously operating boat shop in the United States and is cited as the birthplace of the legendary fishing dory. Lowell’s is the only remaining survivor of the area’s world-renowned dory manufacturing industry that produced in excess of a quarter of a million dories over a period of two centuries. Building more than 2000 boats in 1911, this business was one of the first in the Nation to employ a seminal form of assembly line manufacturing.

Conveyed through seven generations of the Lowell family, Lowell’s Boat Shop was passed to the Odell family in the 1980’s and then to the Newburyport Maritime Society in the 1990’s. In 2006, Lowell’s was purchased by Lowell’s Maritime Foundation, an independent non-profit group with the mission of leading this National Landmark and Working Museum through its third century of wooden boat building.
