About this event
What is Baroque Dance?
Baroque dance is one of the great innovations in dance in the 17th century originated at the French court under Louis XIV, and it is here that we see the first clear stylistic ancestor of classical ballet.
Our Classes
We run classes in Winchester, where all levels are welcome. But if you’re a total beginner then we offer basic classes to help you find the confidence you need to get to know your body.
Teacher
Lesley Strachan is a qualified teacher of dance & drama (Royal Academy of Dancing & Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance), chorographer and historical dancer. She ran a highly successful dance and drama school in Hampshire for decades before becoming interested in Baroque dancing. Lesley offers Baroque Dance workshops to schools, colleges, and universities.
Lesley's style aligns with the great innovations in dance in the 17th century originated at the French court under Louis XIV, and it is here that we see the first clear stylistic ancestor of classical ballet. The style of dance is commonly known to modern scholars as the French noble style or belle dance (French, literally "beautiful dance"), however it is often referred to casually as baroque dance in spite of the existence of other theatrical and social dance styles during the baroque era.
