Event description
Start off Miami Art Week at The Wilzig Museum Building with the opening reception for 3 new exhibitions!

About this Event

Announcing the opening of The Wilzig Museum Building.

Three separate museum exhibitions under one roof kick off Miami Art Week.

1) The Naomi WEAM - The Eroticism of Things: Collections on the History of Sexuality

A pocket watch with a secret rear chamber, a wooden dough scraper, a shiny leather boot, a fresh bread roll – even before Freud, people were attributing erotic qualities to things.

The exhibition The Eroticism of Things traces the material and immaterial production of eroticism. Shape and color, purpose and use, implicit allusions and explicit renderings all make things the stuff of erotic fantasies, while also making them eloquent documents for a cultural history of sexuality. Using examples culled from the collections of sexologists Magnus Hirschfeld and Alfred Kinsey, as well as from Naomi Wilzig’s art collection, the exhibition sheds light on differing natures of and intents in collecting, classifying, presenting, and interpreting erotic things. The show asks what distinguishes eroticism, sexuality, and pornography from each other, how erotic objects reinforce or question gender relations, and how the everyday use of things can even turn killers of love into agents of love.

This is a joint exhibition by the Research Center for the Cultural History of Sexuality at Humboldt University, Berlin and the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge. Produced in collaboration with the Kinsey Institute and The Naomi WEAM.

2) George Daniell Museum - New York, New York: The City, the People

George Daniell's time in New York in the 1930s laid the foundation for his career and had a great impact on his artistic work. Strolling through the city, he captured his experiences in memorable photographs. While visiting the gallery of the photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, George Daniell got to know and made friends with world famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Furthermore, he became friends with Berenice Abbott, whose famous photographs out of the series 'Changing New York' show many similarities to Daniell's New York pictures.

This exhibition is produced in collaboration with ZentralDepot and the George Daniell Estate.

3) Bob Bonis Archive - The Rolling Stones: A Day in the Life, Their First Ever U.S. Recording Session, June 10, 1964

The Bob Bonis Archive presents an exclusive historic collection of photographs of the Rolling Stones' first-ever trip and recording sessions in America at the world famous Chess Records studios in Chicago. Chess Records played a seminal role in the formation of the band, and the recordings that took place made up the majority of the band's first and second albums. The photos in the show, taken by tour manager for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones Bob Bonis, show the band in the studio, recoding songs as well as the downtime in between recordings. This exhibition is a preview of the new Bob Bonis Museum coming to The Wilzig Museum Building in 2020.

The exhibition opening reception is open to the public and will feature music by DJs Andres Aguirre and Mayra Jaimes, an open bar, and access to all museum galleries. The event is free to attend.
