Event description

Description

The NC Bar Foundation's Wills for Heroes pro bono clinics serve to give back to first responders and their families by preparing their end-of-life documents, including: (1) Wills, (2)Powers of Attorney, (3)Health Care Powers of Attorney. Elon University School of Law is hosting a Wills for Heroes clinic on October 27th, from 9:30am-4:30pm.

If you are a first responder looking to sign up for an appointment, click here.

Volunteer attorneys, notaries, law students, and general volunteers are needed for the morning and afternoon shifts on the clinic day.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

1. Attorney Volunteers:

  • Attorney Volunteer: meet with first responders for individualized appointments to review their estate planning questionnaires and generate their estate planning documents with the use of a laptop and HotDocs, a document assembly program. No estate planning experience is required in advance (but attorneys must complete the volunteer training provided before the clinic).

  • Clinic Day Estate Planning Practitioner: attorneys who practice in the area of estate planning can volunteer to serve as identified clinic day estate planning practitioners. As an identified clinic day estate planning practitioner, you will be noted as an attorney that the other volunteers/first responders can go to with estate planning questions that may arise. Each clinic will have at least one estate planning attorney practitioner. Estate planning practitioners will also meet with first responders for appointments, depending on the number of volunteer attorneys available.

2. Notary Volunteers: certified NC public notaries will notarize the signatures of first responders when they execute their estate planning documents.

3. Law Student Volunteers: law students will be paired with attorney volunteers for the appointments with first responders.

4. General Volunteers: volunteers are needed to help with clinic day operations (i.e. assisting at the check in desk, helping with printing documents, serving as a witness when the first responders sign their estate planning documents before a notary, etc.)
