Description

The NC Bar Foundation's Wills for Heroes pro bono clinics serve to give back to first responders and their families by preparing their end-of-life documents, including: (1)Wills, (2)Powers of Attorney, (3)Health Care Powers of Attorney. Duke University School of Law is hosting a Wills for Heroes clinic on March 9th, from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Volunteer attorneys, notaries, law students, and general volunteers are needed for the morning and afternoon shifts on the clinic day.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

1. Attorney Volunteers: Attorney Volunteer: meet with first responders for individualized appointments to review their estate planning questionnaires and generate their estate planning documents with the use of a laptop and HotDocs, a document assembly program. No estate planning experience is required in advance (but attorneys must complete the volunteer training provided before the clinic).

2. Notary Volunteers: certified NC public notaries will notarize the signatures of first responders when they execute their estate planning documents.

3. Law Student Volunteers: law students will be paired with attorney volunteers for the appointments with first responders. Law students should email Kim Burrucker at burrucker@law.duke.edu to sign up to volunteer.

4. General Volunteers: volunteers are needed to help with clinic day operations (i.e. assisting at the check in desk, helping with printing documents, serving as a witness when the first responders sign their estate planning documents before a notary, etc.)

FAQs

Do I need prior estate planning experience in order to participate?
No, volunteers will undergo training before the clinic to prepare them for the use of the HotDocs software used to generate the documents and to educate them on wills, powers of attorney, and health care powers of attorney documents.

Is malpractice insurance provided to volunteers?
Yes, the NC Bar Foundation will provide malpractice insurance for the pro bono work of attorney volunteers during the Wills for Heroes clinics.

Will lunch be provided?
Yes, Duke University School of Law will be sponsoring the lunch for the volunteers!

Who are the clients?
The first responders attending the clinics are local firefighters, police, EMS personnel and their families.

Do I need to bring a laptop?
No, the NCBF will be providing laptops for attorneys to use to generate the documents using the hotdocs software.

What do I wear?
Volunteers are encouraged to dress in business casual attire.
