A Wildmind Retreat: Stress Reduction Through Mindfulness
Research shows that we spend, on average, 48% of our time in distracted states of mind—caught up in thoughts that are unrelated to what we’re doing. Thinking is compulsive! The same research shows that these distracted thoughts are detrimental to our happiness. Compulsive thinking makes us unhappy! In extreme cases, our compulsive thoughts create out-of-control states of depression or stress.
The antidote to this is mindfulness. Mindfulness is the gentle effort to be continuously present with experience. It involves observing our experience rather than merely participating in it. When anxious or depressive thoughts arise, for example, we can simply notice them, and choose not to get drawn into the stories they try to create for us. We are then free to choose responses to stressful situations that make life less rather than more stressful for us.
On this weekend retreat, you will:
- Learn to observe difficult feelings with a non-judgmental attitude
- Lower your stress levels and see decreases in stress-related symptoms
- Develop an increased ability to relax and enjoy each moment
- Observe reduced pain levels or a better ability to cope with pain
- Cultivate an attitude of greater kindness, patience, and acceptance toward yourself
- Enhance your emotional resilience and be better able to cope with stressful situations
- Discover ways to bring mindfulness into daily activities, such as driving, eating, walking, and listening
On this weekend we’ll have a gentle program of workshops, talks, discussions, and meditations—including guided meditations. There will be time for rest, relaxation, and exploration.
The retreat will take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Florida Retreat Center in Palmetto, near Sarasota.
The event is residential, and vegetarian food will be provided. The accommodation is in two-person rooms.
Portions of the retreat will be in silence, with communication limited only to what is necessary and functional.
The retreat will begin at 6:00 PM on Friday and end at 1:00 PM on Sunday.

To allow people of varying income levels to attend, we have three suggested contributions:
- $250 for those with lower disposable incomes
- $350 as the “standard” contribution, and
- $450 for those with more disposable income available.
The price of the retreat includes food and accommodations.
Spaces are limited, and we strongly suggest booking early.
The Florida Retreat Center is located in Palmetto, Florida, between Sarasota and St. Petersburg. The nearest airports are in Sarasota and Tampa.

Bodhipaksa has been practicing meditation for well over 30 years, and has been teaching for two decades. He has published more than a dozen books and audiobooks on meditation and Buddhism, in several languages. He mainly teaches online, though Wildmind, the online meditation center he founded in 2001, although he teaches across North America and internationally.
