Event description

Description

Together with it’s local partners in Romania, WWF and Rewilding Europe, Weylin Tracking from the Netherlands and the European Safari Company have set up an exciting seven day tracking course for a group of maximum eight people in the beautifully wild Țarcu mountains in August 2017.

What's it all about?

Explore the Carpathian mountains in Romania while learning about it’s wildlife from professional trackers and guides, all the while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

You will spend four nights in a comfortable tented camp in the Bison Hillock, accompanied by traditional and locally sourced meals. Dinners around the campfire, under the stars, is a magical way to finish each day.

The days are spent tracking and trailing wildlife with an emphasis on trailing European bison. The area is also home to wolves, lynx, wild boars and bears, among many other species and all offer great learning and tracking exposure.

Where's the course taking place?

Located in the 52.000 hectare Țarcu Mountains Natura 2000 site in the Southern Carpathian mountains, the Bison Hillock is home to an ambitious project aimed to rewild the European bison and conserve this remaining wilderness stronghold in Romania.

Since 2013, Rewilding Europe, WWF-Romania and the local association AMZA are working together in the Southern Carpathians to bring the European bison back into the wild. The first bison releases took place in 2014 and 2015. In June 2016, the third bison release took place, now part of the “LIFE Bison” project funded by the European Union through it's LIFE Programme. During the next four years, annual releases of at least another 80 bison will take place in cooperation with the local community.

How do I get there?

The closest airport is Timișoara, with good connections to international airports such as Munich, Madrid, Eindhoven and others.

We organise transport from the airport to the Bison Hillock Visitor Center in Armeinș at EUR 50 per transport and this is included in the total course fee. If you wish to organise your own car hire, please let us know and we will adjust the final course payment accordingly.

How much does it cost?

The cost for the course is €700, accommodation, transport, food, activities and local/airport transfers. It does not include flights to Romania and extra luggage. The cost is calculated if the course is full capacity (8 people), but will be higher if not all places are filled. Should this be the case, the team will email you and discuss an updated cost - if for some reason you wish to withdraw as a result of a reduced number of participants and higher cost, your deposit will be reimbursed.

Who's guiding you?

Jeroen Kloppenburger - Weylin Tracking

Jeroen Kloppenburg, a Nature Guide qualified by the renowned Institute for Nature and Environmental Education in the Netherlands, has been interested in all aspects of nature ever since he was a child. As the founder and owner of Weylin Tracking, he now dedicates his time in passionately sharing his knowledge and experience with others in the form of tracking and trailing courses.
In 2017 Jeroen was invited along with another group of expert trackers to track and trail bison in the Rewilding Europe Southern Carpathian’s project area. Besides trailing bison the group also found tracks and sign of many other animals such as wild cat, wolf and many more. He was struck by the beauty of the landscape and soon it became clear to let more people enjoy this beautiful landscape with its excellent tracking possibilities. Not to forget the opportunity to watch the animals in their mountainous habitat and explore the complex ecosystem surrounding them.

Georg Messerer - European Safari Company & WWF
A qualified Wilderness Trails Guide with extensive guiding experience in Southern Africa and Romania, Georg brings an international flare and passion to the guiding world in Europe. Spending the last few years guiding and training in the Țarcu Mountains, he has been instrumental in developing nature-based experiences in the Bison Hillock region. With a love for wilderness turning into a passion for the conservation work around it he has dedicated his time and energy to contributing his share to what he believes to be a global responsibility.

Georg loves sharing his knowledge, guiding skills and experiences with like-minded people in the wild.
"Guiding in the Bison Hillock is a very rewarding task. Not just to be able to show interested people a hint of what a European wilderness may have looked like, but also knowing that every guest is directly benefiting the project and the community. It is especially fascinating to see how the impact of the bison is already sending ripples through the complex web of this wilder ecosystem!"
