Minnesota rules currently limit sulfate to 10 parts per million (mg/L) in wild rice waters. The MPCA has proposed to eliminate this sulfate limit and replace it with an equation that would not protect wild rice. The MPCA would also restrict the wild rice waters to which any sulfate limit applies.

Minnesota’s existing limit on sulfate pollution should be preserved and enforced year-round in all wild rice waters to protect clean water, wild rice and tribal resources, and to reduce toxic accumulation of methylmercury in fish.
