Event description

Description

The Lowell's Boat Shop surf dory is an ideal platform from which to enjoy and explore the Great Marsh. Over the course of three days, we will enjoy a laid back, experiential approach to exploration of the marsh and adjacent waterways. Rowing through the Merrimack River, Parker River and nearby creeks, we will immerse ourselves in the natural wonder and beauty of the marsh. Consisting of over 25,000 acres, the Great Marsh contains an amazing diversity of plant life, animal life and recreational opportunities.

The first day we meet to row from Lowell's Boat Shop. We'll gear up and learn to row the ten-oared 27' surf dory. The second day, we will meet at Plum Island, row into the marsh, stay out overnight and return the following day. The final day of the program, we will summarize what we found and discovered, so that we can share it with other community members.

Ellen Link is a science teacher in Newburyport, MA, who specializes in project-based science and ocean literacy. She is happiest when tromping around outdoors with children or her family, near, on, or beneath saltwater.

Alice Twombly has been guiding youth of all ages into adventures on and around local waterways for over 20 years. Alice is known for her ability to help young people learn new skills and have more fun than they knew they could--all while working and playing hard, developing independence and building community.

No prior boating experience needed, all boating and safety equipment provided. Grades 8-12. Tuition $250. A minimum of eight students is required to run this program.
