Event Details

Somewhere near you, wherever you are, there is clay to be found. Learn to identify local clay, and then process some of this special dirt into a workable material. The pinching and coiling techniques used by the earliest humans are still some of the best ways to shape clay, and they will be demonstrated so that each participant can make a small object by the end of the workshop. We’ll compare wild clay with commercially available clay, and talk a bit about traditional potter’s practices and pit firing techniques.

Based on interest, we may follow up with a separately scheduled pit firing of the finished clay pieces, which must dry for at least a week.

Participants should dress comfortably and be prepared to get a little dirty. A rag for drying hands and a plastic bag for bringing home left over clay will also be useful. For ages 12 and older (though students under 16 should be accompanied by an adult).

Taught by writer, artist and all around lovely human Ako Castuera.
