FAQs

What is rock climbing?

Rock climbing is a sport or pastime of climbing rock faces. It is becoming less extreme and more mainstream as more people are trying out this fun, exciting and amazing sport. Rock climbing can be done outdoors on real rock or indoors on artificial walls. Rock climbing can be as safe and controlled as you want it to be using safety equipment. At Carraig Climbing we always use the highest quality safety equipment in our sessions.

What is abseiling?

Abseiling (rappelling) is a method of using a rope to descent a slope by a controlled descent down the slope using the rope and a friction device. This technique is used when a cliff or slope is too steep and dangerous to descend without a rope for protection. Abseiling is also used in industry as a method access otherwise difficult to reach areas such as the underside of bridges for various industrial applications like maintenance, inspection and welding. Rescue teams use abseiling as a way to access injured or stranded victims in remote lonely or other wise dangerous locations.

What is a tyrolean traverse?

A Tyrolean traverse is a method of crossing through free air between two high points on a rope. This method is used in a range of mountain related activities including rock climbing, tree climbing, caving and water crossings.
In rock climbing a Tyrolean traverse is most often used to gain access to a sea stack and return to the mainland after climbing the stack. This method ensures a minimum amount of water crossings for the climbing party.
