Event description

Description

Presenter: Patricia Munoz de Escalona

Education is a preparation for life, and as engineering educators we must assure that our students gain different skills during their educational journey. Skills such as critical thinking, collaborative skills, connectivity and creativity can be enhanced by undertaking teamwork activities (Breivik, 2005, Khine and Saleh 2010). Traditional teaching approaches in engineering courses produce graduates with high technical ability, however in the majority of cases, teamwork and communication skills are either limited or neglected (Kamarudin et al, 2012, Halizab and Zuwawi, 2015).

A Wiki is an e-learning tools that support collaborative learning and student’s engagement such as essay, lessons, exams, etc. (Cole 2009, Lai 2011and Muñoz-Escalona 2018). This tool gives the user the possibility to contribute and edit/modify contents of a page that has been developed and allows academics the tracking of each participant, giving the possibility to check, compare, and restore previous versions making it easier for academics to judge each student’s contributions, which is one of student’s biggest concerned when working in teams. The wiki tool was used as a tool to support teamwork assessment in Manufacture and Materials 2nd year module taken by Mechanical Systems and Computer Aided Manufacturing engineering students. The result shows a high degree of students’ satisfaction when implementing this tool (93%) and it was described by students as new, engaging and convenient.
