Event description

The only thing better than playing some fall wiffle ball is helping to "strike out" NF while doing it!

Join us on October 19th for our first ever Wiffle Ball Tournament!

You can register as an individual, whole team, or submit a donation if unable to participate on game day.

We will be partying at Loft 266 Bar & Lounge on Park Ave in Worcester with free food and beer offered by Shiner Beer. Each ticket will come with a drink ticket, team tickets come with 5!

Game Day Basics:

• Must be 21+ to enter. Alcohol will be present, so please have a valid ID.

• Every ticket comes with a drink ticket for the after party (team tickets come with 5 drink tickets).

• Round robin play, minimum of 3 games per team.

• Teams must have 3-5 people. Teams can signup as a team or as individuals.

• This is a co-ed event but there are no gender requirements for the makeup of teams.

• ***Rain date will be October 20***

• There are 2 divisions: Competitive and Social. Competitive costs slightly more, the extra money will go into a pot which the winning competitive team will take home!

• 3 innings of play, 3 outs per inning.

• No base running required!

• Teams will have 3 players in the field; 1 pitcher and 2 fielders.

• Pitchers can pitch a maximum of 2 innings per game.

• A standard baseball count will be used (4 balls is a walk and 3 strikes is a strikeout).

• A backstop will be setup on each field with a strikezone. A strike is any ball the lands in the strikezone, any time a player swings and miss, or any foul (except on strike 3). A ball is any pitch that a player does not swing at that lands outside the strikezone.

• Other than the rules stated above, standard Wiffle Ball rules will be used- http://www.wiffle.com/pages/game_rules.asp?page=game_rules

All proceeds of this event will be allocated to the cutting-edge NF1 research being conducted at UMass Medical School.

Neurofibromatosis, pronounced neuro-fibroma-tosis, is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in or on the body at any time.

About NF 1

Neurofibromatosis causes unchecked growth of tissue along the nerves. This can put pressure on affected nerves and cause pain, severe nerve damage, and loss of function in the area served by the nerve. Problems with sensation or movement can occur, depending on the nerves affected. The condition can be very different from person to person, even among people in the same family who have the NF1 gene.

The “coffee-with-milk” (café-au-lait) spots are the hallmark symptom of neurofibromatosis. Although many healthy people have 1 or 2 small café-au-lait spots, adults with 6 or more spots greater than 1.5 cm in diameter are likely to have neurofibromatosis. In some people with the condition, these spots may be the only symptom.

Effects of NF 1

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on the covering of the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. The disorder affects 1 in 2,500 to 3,000 males and females of all races and ethnic groups. The NF-1 gene is located on chromosome 17.

Other symptoms may include:

· Blindness

· Seizures

· Freckles in the underarm or groin

· Large, soft tumors called plexiform neurofibromas, which may have a dark color and may spread under the surface of the skin

· Pain (from affected peripheral nerves)

· Small tumors of the skin called nodular neurofibromas

Each patient with NF manages their symptoms with help from several specialist and NF Clinics. Someone who is born with NF, will have NF their entire life. Symptoms will come and go with new symptoms occurring at any time. There is no cure for NF. This tournament will help to fund research to improve the quality of life of those effect by NF and hopefully lead to a cure.
