About this event
What is the WiDS Datathon Workshop?
The WiDS Cambridge Datathon Workshop is an annual workshop preceding the WiDS Cambridge Conference. The workshop aims to provide mentorship and training for those interested in participating in the WiDS Datathon Challenge, and, more generally, anyone with a strong interest in data science.
This year the workshop will be virtual and will happen over two sessions:
February 12th, 10am-3pm Eastern Time
February 19th, 11am-3pm Eastern Time
How is the workshop structured?
The WiDS Datathon workshop consists of a data science/machine learning tutorial (delivered through pre-recorded videos) followed by a team-based practical session focused on a single data science task (over a virtual meeting platform). In this workshop:
- you will be introduced to data science/machine learning concepts and methods (especially relevant to the WiDS Datathon Challenge)
- you will be able to form teams during the workshop and get hands-on experience implementing machine learning models and working with the WiDS Datathon dataset
- you will receive mentoring from data scientists and machine learning researchers from universities and tech companies in the Boston area.
How much does attendance cost?
Since our workshop capacity is limited, we want to encourage participantsto sign up for the workshop only if they plan to attend. As such, at registration we ask for a non-refundable general registration fee of $50 or a student registration fee of $25. However, we want to make the datathon workshop accessible to everyone and do not want the registration fee to a barrier to participation. Thus, we encourage participants for whom the registration fee constitute a large financial burden to apply for a fee waiver.
Who should sign up for the workshop?
We invite all participants with a strong interest in data science!
Programming experience as well as some previous training in probability, statistics and mathematics is helpful. But we welcome participants from all backgrounds!
How can participants prepare for the workshop?
All workshop related materials will be available on the workshop website.
Participants are encouraged to watch the pre-recorded content and work on the corresponding exercises prior to the first workshop meeting (February 12th).
