Wider Horizons

A Transformational Gathering in Nature for Young Adults
Friday 13th Sept - Sunday 15th Sept 2019
For thousands of years communities throughout the world have held rituals to support young people through their transition to adulthood, but we’ve largely lost this in our modern western culture. Wider Horizons has been intentionally created to provide a place where you can explore spirituality, science and consciousness and develop a deeper connection with nature.
The average 18-21 year-old now spends three-four hours a day on social media and another three hours a day on other screen-based work. This initiative will enable you to re-connect with your body, with others and with nature. At the same time you will discover a new appreciation of the richness of the inner and outer world.
This year Wider Horizons will be held at Wasing Park in a beautiful glade in ancient woodland surrounded by lakes, rivers and wildlife, just 45 minutes from London. Workshops and gatherings will be held in a giant yurt and a magnificent stretch marquee. You are welcome to bring your own tents, caravans or campervans. Alternatively, boutique bell tent accommodation is available (contact dan@green-owl.co.uk). Heated outdoor showers provide for an authentic woodland experience. Culinary delights will be prepared in an outdoor kitchen by our experienced outdoor chef and the ticket price is inclusive of food for three days. Evening celebrations will involve music, singing, drumming and dancing around the fire. Bring instruments, drums, percussion and dancing feet.
Wider Horizons is for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. It integrates five main aspects: a vision quest, a rite of passage ritual, workshops, feasting and celebrating.
The workshops are designed to support you in your development. The contributors include professors, doctors, lecturers, Taoist sages, shamen, artists as well as other practitioners from a variety of healing disciplines. You are able to choose from a diverse workshop programme that includes lucid dreaming, expressive dance, individual and group healing, shared story-writing, martial arts and sacred singing. As well as learning new skills, you will have opportunities to explore questions about who we are and the mysteries of consciousness and our relationship with the physical world.
The vision quest combines an inward journey into yourself and an outward journey into nature. It involves finding your own space to meditate and experience nature, to discover a deeper understanding of yourself and the world.
The Rite of Passage ritual is co-developed and led by MSc Students on the ALEF Trust Transpersonal Psychology course. It uses applied mindfulness, consciousness and spirituality to create a sensory journey that takes place in the woods, culminating in a celebration around the sacred fire where you can connect to the well of wisdom within.
Special things to bring:
Tent, bed roll, sleeping bag, pillow
Musical instruments
Head torch
Biodegradable soap and shampoo
Biodegradable toothpaste
Cup, bowl, plate and cutlery.
Water bottle
Hand bag/small rucksack
An open heart

Wider Horizons is a consciousness raising event so we have some agreements we ask you to support. These are - no dogs, no drugs or alcohol, no mobile phone use in the gathering area, no photography, no chemical soap (biodegradable soap will be provided by sinks, but please also bring your own for showering), if you smoke please bring a portable ashtray, leave no trace (be conscious of where you put rubbish - there will be different rubbish bins for compost, different recyclables and land fill), no cars in the camping area - you can drive on and drop off, but then please immediately take your car to the car park.

THE WIDER HORIZONS 2019 PROGRAMME AND CONTRIBUTORS

Dr Oliver Robinson PhD, Senior Lecturer, University of Greenwich
KEEPING OPEN TO THE GREAT MYSTERY; WHY MUCH LIES BEYOND THE PROVINCE OF SCIENCE
Be prepared to go on a journey into the evidence for a Great Mystery that lies beyond the physical world and beyond our waking reality. The Dakota tribe have a lovely word for this Great Mystery – “Wakan Tanka”. We will explore some of the evidence for it, including the mystery of consciousness, the mystery of where natural laws and physical constants come from, the mathematical patterns in nature that have no scientific or rational explanation, and the mystical and visionary experiences that are becoming more common in the general population. Links will be drawn to the era of the enlightenment as a rite of passage for mankind, who “collectively changed from children to adults” at that time, and developed "the courage to use their own understanding.” Participants will engage in thought experiments about the nature of consciousness, share some meditation practices, explore some mathematical mysteries through running hand calculations, and share their own experiences of non-normal states of consciousness.

Charlie Morley, Hay House author and Buddhist lucid dreaming teacher
LEARN HOW TO LUCID DREAM
By using the best of both Tibetan Buddhist and Western dream-work techniques, Charlie’s workshops offer a uniquely holistic approach to lucid dreaming and conscious sleeping with the aims of wider holistic benefits; psychological growth and self-discovery.

Professor Marilyn Monk, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia
SCIENTIST, POET AND MYSTIC: COMPLEMENTARY WAYS OF KNOWING AND BEING.
A workshop exploring self-mastery which will enable you to consider where you are on a passage to, how you are conditioned in the womb and early childhood and the role you play in society to become a person, who is just one of 'hundreds of possible persons you could be'. Do you become a person according to early conditioning and the role you play in society? Who are you? Through self-mastery, you can govern your evolution using your imagination.

Rina Golan, Meditation and Yoga Teacher
THE PURUSHARTHA
The Purushartha is an ancient blueprint for living well. As well as leading hatha yoga practice, Rina Golan will explain how to live with passion and in service (dharma), create material abundance and physical health (artha), nurture emotional wellbeing (kama) and operate with mindful awareness (moksha).

Dr Jessica Bockler PhD, is Founding Director of the ALEF Trust, a global learning provider which offers education programmes in consciousness studies, spirituality and transpersonal psychology and will offer the following three workshops:

AWAKENING THE TANDEN
A morning session, introducing kata (movement sequences with wooden staff & sword) from the Japanese martial art Iaido. The kata are designed to strengthen awareness of, and ability to relate from, our Tanden (Japanese) or Dāntián (Chinese) – the psychospiritual seat of our life energy.

WATCHWORD TECHNIQUE
In this session we explore the Watchword Technique (Daniels, 1991), a Jungian system of self-study which uses a game of word association in the investigation of the structure and dynamics of the psyche. Discover your Watchword Matrix – a unique map of your mind!

EXPRESSIVE MOVEMENT RITUALS
In this session we explore the psyche through expressive movement and spatial constellations. Using spontaneous embodiment, Jungian psychology and expressive arts, we delve into self-exploration through spatial metaphor and archetypal themes, shining a deeper light into the tapestry of our body-mind.

Ben Gross MBACP(Accred) MSc MBSR PGCE
Events organiser, Musician, Psychotherapist and Meditation teacher
SACRED SINGING CIRCLE
When asked what we could do to halt the self-destructive course we are on as a whole human society, a group of international Wisdom Keepers, Elders and Shamans advised us to connect with spirit and live a spiritual life. There is no dichotomy between meditation and contemplation and action/activism. The two are one. In sacred singing we meditate and send prayers to people and situations which need healing. The power of group intention to heal is starting to be recognised now through scientific research. This workshop is an opportunity to experience this by singing sacred songs from around the world. It is an opportunity to come together as one to celebrate this beautiful, holy life that we’re all in, together. Please bring instruments and an open heart.

Cleo Broda, MFA Master of Fine Arts, PGCert Learning and Teaching in Art and Design, Lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts, Accredited Coach with RD1st Relational Dynamic Coaching
MAP WORKSHOP
An art workshop where participants will use natural materials to make individual maps charting significant moments in their lives. The maps will represent important landmarks, layers of changes, routes taken or left aside. We will use natural objects gathered from the woods along with drawing materials. The workshop will culminate in making a large group map which makes connections between the individual maps, finding links and charting common terrain.

Mark Mabon, Systemic Coach and Constellations Facilitator
MUSES AND URGES
A workshop exploring how cultures have used trance, dance and other techniques to alter our state of consciousness and access ‘higher’ states, for pleasure, illumination, insight and transformation. When all these things can also be used to avoid emotional pain, how do we avoid falling into addictive patterns? In this workshop we will use some unique mystery techniques so participants can explore this territory for themselves and learn new ways to navigate our wild nature, instinctive urges and creative drives.

Melissa More, Lightworker

Louis Weinstock, Transpersonal Psychotherapist
JOURNEYS OF CHANGE
This experiential workshop will explore, “What I want to let go of and what to bring with me as I become an adult? Were my childhood needs met? How I’m changing.” Louis will offer therapeutic techniques to access the wisdom of your unconscious mind, accept your past and dream in potential futures.

James Mermagen, Head of Chaucer Barn Mystery School
DRUIDIC MAGIC, SPELLS AND RUNES
Wand-making workshop.

David King, Student of Psychiatry
RITES OF PASSAGE
A Talk-workshop describing how parents and their children can better understand each other through activities in our society which form rites of passage - especially changes which are difficult or emotionally painful. How millennia-old ritual structures can be used to help all members of the families get through difficult times. This will help you prepare for the challenges you will have to negotiate throughout your life by becoming aware of ritual processes you are going through. Dave King will present a case for why parents need to be actively engaged in the emotional lives and activities of their children, and how you can maintain your access to this support as you transition into adulthood.

Joe Cathers and his team of woodland cooks will provide delicious breakfasts, lunches and suppers throughout the event included with your ticket. This will always include vegetarian options. There will be a focus on local harvesting.
